Encoded Body

The current digital and the genetic revolution fragments and destabilizes the body, and removes the barriers between inside and outside, self and other, as well as human and non-human. New fusions of biology and technology will inevitably shape the future of humanity. In particular, the discovery of the human genome has massive cultural significance. Now we can quantify the essence of human existence, the potential to change and manipulate humanity arises. With this new reality arises a host of ethical questions for us all to ponder, regarding the necessity of genetic manipultion, how it will be pursued, and for what purposes. Encoded Body, 2001, is an installation which explores some of the ideas and issues surrounding the body and technology
